Nick Wells (Robert De Nero), a professional criminal, decides to leave the business for good, since he nearly got caught on his last job. His plan is to live in peace with his girl Diane, running his jazz club. Soon Max (Marlon Brando), his good friend and financial partner in the illegal affairs, comes along with an offer Nick can't refuse: A historical and priceless French sceptre has been discovered while being smuggled into the country. It is now under massive surveillance in the Customs House, and soon to be returned to France. Nick has to team up with Max' man inside, the young, talented and aggressive thief Jackie Teller (Edward Norton) to get the precious item, and suffer no more financial problems ever. Only one question remains: Who will trick whom out of their share?
نيك ويلز (روبرت دي نيرو) ، مجرم محترف ، يقرر مغادرة الأعمال الأجرامية الى الأبد، لأنه كان أقرب من القبض على فى آخر عمل له. خطته هي العيش في سلام مع فتاته ديان ، مع أدارته لنادى جاز . قريبا ماكس (مارلون براندو) ، صديقه وشريكه فى الأعمال غير المشروعة، يأتي بعرض نيك لا يمكن أن يرفضه : صولجانا فرنسي تاريخي لا يقدر بثمن قد اكتشف أثناء تهريبهم إلى البلاد. وهي تخضع حاليا للمراقبة ضخمة في الجمارك، حتى يعاد الى فرنسا. وعلى نيك العمل مع الشاب جاكي تيلير (ادوارد نورتون) رجل ماكس، لص موهوب وعدوانى، للحصول على البند الثمين، حتى لا يعاني من مشاكل مالية بعد ذللك. ويبقى سؤال واحد فقط : من الذي سوف يخدعة من فى نصيبهم؟
